There are a lot of canon m/m or f/f pairings, or heavily implied in canon m/m or f/f pairings that are really popular on tumblr that are held up a lot as being really great that really bother me.
Like I can think of a bunch off the top of my head that follow a certain trend.
One character really likes the other and this is canon. You would have to be blind to not notice they often declare their love, sometimes if not usually directly to the other character.
The other character does not show interest back at all, sometimes shows confusion or distress instead. This does not dissuade the first character who does not take no for an answer and keeps perusing the second one.
Sometimes character one “wins” and the second character gives in and dates them and it’s canon. Sometimes they just keep bugging them forever. I’ve never seen this happen and character one give up.
So I see these pairings reblogged on my dash being praised. Look how cute this creepy relationship where one character is uncomfortable
and next to these posts are social justice posts saying “no means no” “coercion is not consent” and being generally pissed off at fedora dudes who hit on girls because no isn’t good enough then complaining about being friendzoned.
I cannot possibly be the only one who sees the problem here.
Men can be stalked. Men can be harassed. Men can be manipulated into unhealthy relationships because they are scared to keep saying no.
Women can stalk. Women can harass. Women can manipulate and guilt people into dating them by wearing them down.
Abusive relationships are not being progressive just because of representation. If anything we should be MORE critical of underrepresented people being in relationships like this because there are less healthy relationships for them to see to balance them out.
